The artwork
Sienna Wells’ Ceci n’est pas une huître nods to Magritte’s famous provocation: this is not an oyster. It is an invitation to question what you are really looking at.

Painted early in her oil practice, the work places a giant oyster shell and black pearl against folds of black silk. It feels theatrical, strange, and quietly charged: part still life, part self-portrait, part joke with teeth.

What began as an absurd image became something more symbolic. The shell as body. The absent flesh as soul. The pearl as something left behind.

It holds two truths at once. Everything has deep meaning. Nothing has to.
